From The Seekers Guide To The Hidden Path: In ancient times, trees were worshipped or venerated.  Among some tribes it was believed that trees were the dwelling place of a god or goddess.  A branch was taken from the tree and carried by the priestess or priest as a sign of his or her connection with the deity of the grove.
